Lyphatic and Immune System Flashcards
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
Fluid recovery, immunity, lipid absorption
What are the components of the lymphatic system?
- lymph; 2. lyphatic vessels; 3. lymphatic tissue; 4. lymphatic organs
Why are the lymphatic capillaries different from blood capillaries?
they are closed at the end to prevent the sac from collapsing
What are the layers of lymphatic vessels?
tunica interna, tunica media, tunica externa
What is the route of lymph flow?
lymphatic capillaries, collecting vessels, six lymphatic trunks, two collecting ducts, subclavian veins
What are the 6 types of lymphatic cells?
natural killer (NK) cells, T Cells, B Cells, macrophages, dendritric cells, reticular cells
What are the primary lymphatic organs?
red bone marrow and thymus = T and B cells become immunocompetent
What are the secondary lymphatic organs?
lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen = immunocompetent cells migrate after maturity in primary organs.
What is lymphadenitis?
lymph node under challenge by antigen - painful and swollen
What is lymphadenopathy?
term for all lymph node disease
Why is Lymph node common site of metastatic cancer?
because of high permeability of lymphatic capillaries
Red pulp in spleen consists of ?
sinuses gorged with concentrated erythrocytes
White pulp in spleen consists of ?
lymphocytes and macrophages
What is a pathogen?
virus, bacteria, fungi, other microbe bacteria causing diseases
What are the three lines of defense against pathogens?
- skin and mucous membranes 2. leukocytes and macrophages, antimicrobial proteins, NK cells, inflammation and fever 3. immune system
