3
Q

If the order is zero with respect to a reactant, what does that mean?

6
Q

Write a generic rate equation and state what each term means.

A

Rate = k[X]ˣ[Y]ʸ
Where k = rate constant for the reaction.
[X] and [Y] are concentrations of species X and Y respectively x and y are the orders of reaction with respect to X and Y.

9
Q

How would you calculate the units of the rate constant?

A

Units of rate are moldm-3s-1 and units of concentration are moldm-3. Hence, rearrange to get k = … Then sub in the units and cancel them out.

11
Q

How could you measure the rate of reaction experimentally? (Different methods)

A

Use a colorimeter at suitable intervals if there is a colour change.
If gas is involved, use a gas syringe to collect volume of gas evolved, or measure the change in mass of reaction mixture.

16
Q

What is the relationship between first order reactions and half life?

A

First order reactants have a constant half life.

17
Q

What is the equation that is used to determine rate constant using half life in a first order reaction?

A

k = ln2/t 1/2

18
Q

How would you draw a rate concentration graph?

A

Plot [A] against time, draw tangents at different values –> draw a secondary graph of rate against [A].

19
Q

What is the relationship between rate and time?

A

Rate is proportional to 1/t.

20
Q

Draw a rate concentration graph for a zero order reactant.

A

Straight line of y = 3 for example.

21
Q

Draw a rate concentration graph for a first order reactant.

22
Q

Draw a rate concentration graph from a seconda order reactant.

23
Q

How to determine the rate constant from a rate concentration graph of first order?

A

k = rate/concentration.

24
Q

What is the rate determining step?

A

The slowest step in a reaction with multiple steps.

25
How does the rate determining step link to the species involved in the rate equation.
Any species involved in the rate determining step will appear in the rate equation. Species only involved after the rate determining step do not appear in the rate equation.
26
For a reactant in the rate equation, what indicates how many molecules of that reactant are involved in the rate determining step?
The order of the reactant.
27
The rate equation of a reaction is rate = k[NO]². How many molecules of NO will be present in the rate determining equation.
2
28
What affects the value of the rate constant for a given reaction?
Only temperature.
29
What is the effect of a 10C temperature increase on the rate of reaction, roughly?
Doubles the rate of reaction.
30
What is arrhenius equation? What does each term mean?
k = Ae -Ea/RT where: k = rate constant A = Pre exponential factor e = mathematical quantity R = gas constant T = temperature in kelvin Ea = activation energy for reaction in joules.
31
How can you convert the Arrhenius equation into a useful form for plotting a graph?
ln k = -Ea/RT + lnA The graph of lnk against 1/T is a straight line meaning the gradient = -Ea/RT and the y intercept is lnA.
