M6 Deck - Nutrition (Photosynthesis) Flashcards
(32 cards)
What is Photosynthesis?
the process used by plants to convert energy of light, water, oxygen and carbon dioxide into a glucose used for energy
What are the three types of nutrition?
Autotroph
Heterotroph
Sapprophyte
What is autotrophic nutrition?
plants that make their own food; “self feeders”.
What is heterotrophic nutrition?
consumers that feed on other organisms
What is saprophyte?
decomposers that feed on the dead autotrophs and heterotrophs
What is glucose used for?
it used for the plant to make all the carbohydrates, fats and proteins it needs.
Why must autotrophic nutrition occur before heterotrophic nutrition?
first the plant takes in inorganic substances to make then organic then animals can feed on the plants
Why are saprophytes valuable?
they are valuable because the feed on the dead plants and animals and cycle their materials back to earth
What is the simple equation for Photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O —–> C12 H6 06 + 6O2
carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
What is chlorophyll?
a complex green pigment found inside the chloroplast used to trap the light energy.
What are the two main stages in photosynthesis?
the light-dependent stage and the light-independent stage
What 2 things happens in the light-dependent stage?
- the energy trapped by chlorophyll is used to split water (H2O) into hydrogen and oxygen.
- The oxygen is a waste and gets diffused out of the leaf.
Which stage of photosynthesis does not need light?
the light-independent stage
What happens in the light-independent stage?
- the hydrogen combines with the carbon dioxide (CO2) to make carbohydrates (aka. glucose)
Which organ is specialized for photosynthesis?
the leaf has many cells arranged in a way suited for photosynthesis.
Why are plants seen to be green?
because the chlorophyll in the chloroplast absorbs all color from the light spectrum except green color spectrum
What two substances combine to produce carbohydrates?
carbon dioxide and water combine to produce carbohydrates (glucose).
blank card sorry
ok hi
What are necessary factors for photosynthesis?
- Carbon Dioxide
- Water
- Sunlight
- Chlorophyll
What do carbohydrates release and how?
they release energy by cell respiration
Carbohydrates convert into..
starch for storage because glucose is not a good storage molecule
What gets transported through the phloem?
carbohydrates that change into sucrose
Carbohydrates combine to form which two substances and what are they used for?
fats and oils; they are used to form cell membrane and to store food.
how are protein molecules formed?
they are formed by carbohydrates joining together with mineral salts from soil.
