15
Q

Why do modern jet aircraft cruise near the tropopause?

A

The air is thinner, resulting in less drag and consequently a higher fuel efficiency. It is also above most of the weather, meaning there will be less turbulence.

16
Q

What is meant when the tropopause is described as an isothermal layer?

A

The temperature is constant throughout. (-56.5C)

17
Q

What height does the stratosphere extend to?

A

Above the tropopause- 50km (31 miles) high

18
Q

How does temperature vary with altitude in the stratosphere?

19
Q

What 4 factors is aircraft flight influenced by?

A
  • Pressure
  • Temperature
  • Density
  • Humidity
20
Q

What is the atmospheric pressure at sea level that has been determined by ICAO?

A

1013.25hPa(14.7 psi) at 15C.

21
Q

At what rate does atmospheric temperature decrease per 1000ft in altitude?

A

Roughly 2C per 1000ft until the tropopause, where it is constant at -56.5C.

22
Q

How does density, pressure and height relate?

A

Density and pressure are proportional to each other but inversely proportional to height.

23
Q

What is relative humidity?

A

Relative humidity is a measure of the amount of water vapour present in the air compared to the maximum amount of water it could hold at a given temperature.

24
Q

What is the relationship between humidity and air density?

A

As humidity increases, the air density decreases.

25
What is the relative humidity at 40,000ft?
1 or 2%
26
What are the ISA values at sea level for pressure, density and temperature?
1013.25hPa, 1.224kg/m^3, 288.15K
