Q

What is the goal of his text?

A

Following the political instability in Florence in the late 15th century, he wanted to write a guide of sorts that underlines how to achieve political stability and an effective government in a state, because he saw the negative effects instability had on the population.

Q

What are the cons of mixed principalities?

A

Men are quick to change leaders if they think it will benefit them, so they will take up arms against their new leaders. In defending their rule, the new ruler will offend the people through soldiers.

Q

What reputation should a prince uphold?

A

qualities a Prince should pretend to uphold include: being merciful, generous, trustworthy, religious, but he points out that these qualities will ultimately undermine the prince’s authority. So, it is better to not really be these qualities if they mean to bring about self-ruin, but to project them onto the people. His actions must also seem great, dignified, and strong so that no one can imagine that he can deceive him

Q

Is it better to be generous or a miser?

A

It is better in the long run to be a miser. Even though it has negative connotations, people will eventually appreciate the Prince’s frugality AND he will still have money leftover in times of war and to pursue enterprises without burdening the people. He can also be generous with these saved funds without taxing people, which will be more appreciated.

To avoid being hated, he must not seize property or women or honour, or take a citizen’s life without proper justification. Also being changeable and frivolous, and effeminate or cowardly.

Q

Does Machiavelli think it’s okay for politicians to lie?

A

it is fine to lie if it’s for the greater good of the state. He believes that the ruler should look honest and loving even though he is not. Since men do not always keep their promises, it is an impossible standard for the prince to keep his as well. If he were to uphold this unreasonable standard, his lack of manipulation tactics would be taken advantage of by all the other rulers, resulting in a weak and unprotected state.

17
Q

Is it better to stay neutral or pick a side and fight?

A

Pick a side!
If you helped the victor, they would reward you because they are obliged to you.
o If you went against them, you will be punished, but at least you have the help of the other nation whom you helped. And in the future, you will more likely come to each other’s defense.
o But if you did nothing, then whoever ends up the victor will not fear you, and they may choose to target you next, the nation state that lost will probably not help you, because you did not help them.
