Macromolecules Flashcards
(5 cards)
Define macromolecules
Large, complex molecules that are composed of lots of monomers and bonded together to form polymers.
Identify inorganic & organic compunds
Organic: Contain carbon& hydrogen atoms
Inorganic: Can have one or the other, but don’t contain both carbon and hydrogen atoms
Difference/similarity between
monomers/polymers
Monomers: Small, single units that can join together to form larger molecules
Polymers: Large molecules made up of repeating monomer units
Define and describe dehydration
synthesis/hydrolysis
Dehydration synthesis: It builds molecules up and require energy (removes water)
Hydrolysis: It breaks molecules down and release energy(adds a water molecule)
Identify lipids,
carbohydrates,
proteins,
and nucleotides
- Carbohydrates
-monosaccharides
-C,H,O
•provide quick energy
•provide structure to cells and organisms
•store energy
- Lipids
-Fatty acids
-C,H,O
•store energy
•form major part of biological membranes
•stabilize animal membrane
•protection
- Proteins
•carry out nearly all the functions of the cells
- Nucleic Acids
-nucleotides
-C,H,O,N,P
