-in literary analysis it is found that women are either presented as pure(Madonna) or impure(whore) this distinction has christian roots in the 2 major biblical; female models eve and the Virgin Mary
- the original sin depicts a women’s role in humanity’s eviction from paradise
- any woman who had sex before marriage would be known as a fallen woman- someone who had given in to immorality and was a danger to the morality of men
