Swiss Family Treehouse
- Opened October 1, 1971
- Takes about 10 minutes to walk through - 116 steps
- Based on the 1960 film, Swiss Family Robinson
- 60 feet tall, 90 feet wide, with over 300,000 polyethylene leaves
- Only the Spanish moss is real
Magic Carpets of Aladdin
- Opened May 24, 2001
- The ride lasts about 80 seconds
- It was the Adventureland introduction to characters from a Disney animated film
- The two camels were first used in the Aladdin Royal Caravan parade at Hollywood Studios in 1994
- Take note of the jewels in the cement
Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room
- Opened October 1, 1971
- The show is 10 minutes long
- It features 88 singing birds
- The original Disneyland version, which opened in 1963, was the first attraction to use audio-animatronics technology
- The roof of the attraction appears to be covered in straw, but it is actually sheet metal cut to look like straw (to prevent fire)
Jungle Cruise
- Opened October 1, 1971
- The trip takes about 10 minutes
- Inspired by the 1955 Disney documentary “The African Lion”
- Boats are 27 feet long and hold 37 guests and go about 2 mph and are powered by 60 hp natural gas engines
- Famous past skippers of the Disneyland Jungle Cruise include Robin Williams, Kevin Costner, and John Lasseter
Pirates of the Caribbean
- Opened December 15, 1973 - exactly 7 years after Walt’s death
- It is approximately 10 minutes long on 15 passenger boats
- Was never intended to be built in the Magic Kingdom due to Florida’s close proximity to the Caribbean, but guests loved the Disneyland version and wanted it at Disney World
- There is a 14 foot drop that is 52 feet long - Its purpose is to get guests under the WDW Railroad and to the “show building”
- 125 audio-animatronic figures: 65 people and 60 animals
Splash Mountain
- Opened October 2, 1992
- Ride time is 11 minutes - HR=40”
- Based on the 1946 Disney film, Song of the South
- The attraction holds over 950,000 gallons of water
- The final drop is 52 feet high at a 45° angle and 40 mph
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
- Opened November 15, 1980
- Ride time is 3 ½ minutes
- 40-30-20 HR=40”, Top Speed=30 mph, 20 audio-animatronics
- The attraction cost 17 million to build - in 1979 dollars, which is what the total cost of Disneyland was in 1955
- Story:
- Tumbleweed was a thriving mining town
- The mountain was a sacred spot to local Native Americans and was cursed
- The settlers desecration of the mountain caused a flood, and the town was abandoned
- Some time later, the Locomotives were found racing around the town on their own
- Big Thunder Mountain was founded in the old mining camp to allow tourists to ride the possessed trains
Country Bear Jamboree
- Opened October 1, 1971
- Show lasts about 11 minutes – 380 guests
- One of 3 opening day attractions original to Disney World
- The show features 22 audio-animatronics - 18 bears
- From 1986 to 1991 the show changed to Country Bear Vacation Hoedown, and it held special Christmas shows from 1984-2006
Tom Sawyer Island
- Opened May 20, 1973
- The island is 3.3 acres
- There are 4 – 70 passenger rafts, powered by natural gas - they are named after characters in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer:
- Tom Sawyer
- Injun Joe
- Becky Thatcher
- Huck Finn
- Fort Sam Clemens was renamed Fort Langhorn in 1996
- Langhorne was the middle name of Samuel Clemens
- Harper’s Mill
- Tom Sawyer had a friend named Joe Harper.
- It is also a nod to prominent Imagineer Harper Goff, who was a major contributor to the Disney parks
The Hall of Presidents
- Opened October 1, 1971
- 23 minute show - every half hour - in a 700 seat theater
- Modeled in part on Independence Hall in Philadelphia with
- The number 1787 on the building refers to the year the United States Constitution was ratified - and the era of Liberty Square
- All of the Presidents were sculpted by Blaine Gibson up until Barack Obama, sculpted by his protégé Valerie Edwards
Liberty Square Riverboat
- Opened October 2, 1971
- The trip takes about 17 minutes – on holds 450 passengers
- The original boat was called the Admiral Joe Fowler after the man who oversaw construction on both Disneyland & the MK
- This boat was damaged in 1980 during a refurbishment and it never returned to service
- A second boat was introduced in 1973 and was named the Richard F. Irvine who was the Vice President of Imagineering
- The Irvine underwent a major refurbishment in 1996 and was rechristened the Liberty Belle - which is currently in use
Haunted Mansion
• Opened October 1, 1971
• The attraction takes about 15 minutes – 160 “doombuggies”
• The mansion is of gothic style, similar to 18th century Hudson River Valley structures
- The weathervane on the roof is actually a bat
- The mini towers that adorn the roof are chess pieces
- The flower planters are cremation urns
- The columns beside the front door are coffin shaped
- Black wreath on front door – bad illness or death inside
• The authentic hearse, built in the 1860s during the Civil War was used in the 1965 John Wayne film: The Sons of Katie Elder
• The Haunted Mansion is the only place in all of Disney where the cast members don’t smile
Peter Pan’s Flight
- Opened October 3, 1971
- Ride time is 2 minutes 45 seconds
- Based on Disney’s 1953 film
- The “traffic” in London is created by glow-in-the-dark paint on a moving bicycle chain
- A barrel outside the attraction actually covers a fire hydrant
it’s a small world
• Opened October 1, 1971
• Ride time is 12 minutes – 20 passenger boats
• It was originally at the 1964 New York World’s Fair where over 10 million guests rode it - before it moved to Disneyland
• There are 289 audio-animatronic doll figures
- 100 nations are represented
- Only two American dolls in the whole attraction
- 500,000 gallons of water is used to fill the canal
Prince Charming Regal Carrousel
- Opened October 1, 1971
- Ride time is 2 minutes – 86 horses
- Was Cinderella’s Golden Carrousel until June of 2010
- Built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1917 making it the oldest attraction in all of Walt Disney World
- There are 2,325 lights on the carrousel and18 painted scenes
Mickey’s Philharmagic
- Opened October 8, 2003
- Show lasts 12 minutes – 486 guests
- It has the largest seamless projection screen in the world
- 150 feet wide and 28 feet high
- The entire production was created totally on computer
- The theater was previously occupied by:
- Mickey Mouse Revue: 1971-1980
- Magic Journeys: 1987-1993
- Legend of the Lion King: 1994-2002
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
• There is a mural in Owl’s house that shows Mr. Toad handing over the deed of the property to Owl
Mad Tea Party
- Opened October 1, 1971
- Ride time is 90 seconds – 18 tea cups
- Inspired by the tea party scene in the 1951 Disney adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland
- 10/6 on the Mad Hatter’s hat is the price of the hat - ten shillings, 6 pence
- On the side of the attraction facing the castle, there is a quote inscribed on a large leaf
- It is a tribute to the late Imagineer, Randy Pausch
- He was a professor who’s “Last Lecture” video was incredibly popular online and book was a best seller
Dumbo the Flying Elephant
- Opened March 12, 2012
- Ride time is 90 seconds
- The attraction is based on the 1941 Disney animated feature
- It originally opened on October 1, 1971, then moved to Storybook Circus and added a 2nd carousel and indoor queue
- Each Dumbo has 16 ride vehicles that carry 32 guests at a time
The Barnstormer featuring the Great Goofini
- Opened March 12, 2012
- Ride time is 1 minute – HR=35”
- Originally called the Barnstormer at Goofy’s Wiseacre Farm which opened on October 1, 1996
- The ride reaches a top speed of 25 mph and is 30 feet tall
- Along with one Dumbo carousel, it was the first attraction to open in the “New Fantasyland”
Tomorrowland Speedway
• Opened October 1, 1971
• Ride lasts 5 minutes - HR=32” or 54” to drive alone
• Top speed is 7.5 mph on Briggs & Stratton 9 hp engines
• There are a total of 146 cars at a price of $6,000 per car
• When it originally opened it was called Grand Prix Raceway
- It became the Tomorrowland Speedway in 1996
- It was Tomorrowland Indy Speedway from 2000-2008
Space Mountain
- Opened January 15, 1975
- Ride lasts 2 ½ minutes – HR=44”
- Took 3 years to build
- Top speed is 28 mph – on two 3,200 foot tracks
- The base of the attraction is 300 feet in diameter – 183 feet tall
Astro Orbiter
- Opened April 30, 1994
- Ride time is 90 seconds – holds 24 guests
- The ride does 11 rotations per minute and 1.2 mil miles per year
- You travel about ¾ of a mile on your journey
- The original attraction was called Star Jets, which debuted on November 28, 1974
Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover
- Opened July 1, 1975
- Ride lasts 10 minutes – 900 guests per hour
- Top speed is 6.8 mph and the track is just over 1 mile
- The attraction is powered by 533 electromagnets that form the linear induction system - quiet and pollution free
- Originally, the attraction was called the WEDway PeopleMover
- It became the Tomorrowland Transit Authority in 1994
- It changed to the current name on August 5, 2010
