- visits to prisons
after training
- given a mentor and accompanied in court at least 8-11 times
- attend a further 7 training sessions
- keep a development log of their progress
- after one year their performance will be appraised to check for all the competencies
advantages of magistrates
- not paid so cheap for government
- no qualifications needed
- deals with 97% of cases so easy and cheap
- serve justice in their own area
- volunteered so determined and committed people apply
disadvantages of magistrates
- not qualified in law
- only one qualified lawyer in the court room
- majority are conservative
- slow process due to stopping to ask the clerk for advice
- in consistency in sentencing
