Magnetic storage Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
How do Magnetic devices work
A
they use a magnetic field to magnetise tiny individual sections of a metal spinning disk
2
Q
Each tiny section represents
A
one bit
3
Q
As the disk is spinning
A
a read/write head moves across its surface.
4
Q
To write data
A
the head magnetises or demagnetises a section of the disk that is spinning under it.
5
Q
To read data
A
the head makes a note of whether the section is magnetised or not.
6
Q
Advantages of magnetic devices
A
cheap, high in capacity and durable
7
Q
Disadvantages of magnetic devices
A
susceptible to damage if dropped, vulnerable to magnetic fields
8
Q
Examples of magnetic storage devices
A
Floppy disk
magnetic tape
Hard disk drive
