Magnetism Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is the law of magnetism?
Opposite poles attract, and like poles repel
What are the magnetic policies for soft metals?
-They are easy to magnetise
-Easy to lose their magnetism
What are the magnetic policies for hard metals?
-They are difficult to magnetise
-It is hard to lose their magnetism
What is a magnetic field?
The region around a magnet when a force acts on another magnet or another magnetic material
Where is the magnetic field the strongest?
They are the strongest at the poles (north and south)
What does the magentic field look like for 2 attracting poles?
What does the magnetic field look like for 2 repelling poles?
What elements in the periodic table are magnetic?
Iron
Cobalt
Nickel
What is a magnetic field line?
Magnetic field lines are used to represent the strength and direction of a magnetic field
What does a uniform field look like?
What are induced magnets?
When a magnetic material is placed in a magnetic field, the material can temporarily be turned into a magnet.
What happens when magentism is induced in a material?
-One end of the material will become a north pole
-The other end will become a south pole
What does a magnetic field around a bar magnet look like?
