Magnetism Flashcards
(30 cards)
What are the two poles of a magnet?
North and South pole
Every magnet has a North and South pole.
What do like poles do?
Repel
Opposite poles attract.
In which direction do magnetic field lines flow outside a magnet?
North → South
Inside the magnet, they flow South → North.
What does a compass align with?
Earth’s magnetic field
It points toward Earth’s magnetic South Pole.
Why does a compass needle point north?
It aligns with Earth’s magnetic field.
What happens if you cut a magnet in half?
You get two smaller magnets, each with a North and South pole.
What does a current-carrying wire produce?
A magnetic field around it.
What does the thumb represent in Right-Hand Rule #1 (RHR #1)?
Current direction.
What do the fingers represent in Right-Hand Rule #1 (RHR #1)?
Magnetic field loops.
What happens to the magnetic field if current increases?
The magnetic field becomes stronger.
Which direction does the magnetic field circle a vertical wire?
Counterclockwise when viewed from above.
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire.
What does a solenoid behave like when current flows?
A bar magnet.
What does the thumb represent in Right-Hand Rule #2 (RHR #2)?
Direction of North Pole of the coil.
What is the characteristic of the magnetic field inside the solenoid?
Strong and uniform.
How can you increase the magnetic field strength inside a solenoid?
Increase current or number of coils.
What are electromagnets?
Magnets that require current and can be turned on/off.
What factors affect the strength of an electromagnet?
- Current
- Number of coils
- Core material
What are permanent magnets?
Magnets with a fixed magnetic field that don’t require electricity.
What advantages do electromagnets have?
They can be turned on/off and their strength can be adjusted.
What happens to a wire carrying current in an external magnetic field?
It experiences a force.
What does the palm represent in Right-Hand Rule #3 (RHR #3)?
Direction of force on the wire.
What orientation produces no magnetic force on a wire?
When current is parallel to the magnetic field.
What is magnetic flux?
Amount of magnetic field passing through a loop.
