Magnetism Flashcards
(17 cards)
Magnetic field
A region in space in which a magnet or ferromagnetic material
experiences a magnetic force.
Properties of magnetic field
(6)
Invisible
3D
Non-contact repulsion or attraction force
The denser the magnetic field lines, the stronger the magnetic field
Direction always from the North pole to the South Pole
Pole
A region of high concentration of magnetic field lines.
The ferromagnetic material
Iron
Nickel
Cobalt
What is ferromagnetic material
Unique atomic and crystalline structures that give them
magnetic characteristics.
What is a Magnetic domain
Atoms that are arranged in small units
What is a unmagnetised ferromagnetic material
The domains are aligned in different direction making the magnetic field zero
How to magnetise a material
Place it in a magnetic field the domains align
What is hard iron and what is made out of
Keeps it’s magnetic characteristics for a long time (Used in permanent magnetics)
And alloy mainly contains ferromagnetic material
Soft iron
Easily loses its magnetism ( electromagnets )
Why is a soft iron easily demagnetised
The magnetic domain aligns itself very quickly in parallel lines when it
comes in contact with an external magnetic field.
The magnetic domain also quickly swings out of this parallel arrangement
when the external magnetic field is removed.
It will be made of an alloy containing less ferromagnetic material then other metals.
What is Curie temperature
The heat that a magnetic loses it magnetic characteristic
Why does high temperature remove the magnetics magnetic properties
The kinetic energy given causes the magnetic domain to move out of
arrangement or out of line.
What is Curie temperature
The heat that a magnetic loses it magnetic characteristic

How should a permanent magnet be stored
At room temperature
How should a bar magnet be stored
I’m parallel to each other with opposite sides facing each other
