- Senator Charles Sumner gave anti-slavery speech insulting Southern senators
- Representative Preston Brooks beat him with a cane on the Senate floor

- Attempt to start a slave revolt by seizing the arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, VA
- Failed; Brown was captured and executed
- Viewed as a martyr in the North, terrorist in the South
