Q

How do soaps and detergents act as cleaning agents?

A

Charged end of the surfactant ion dissolves in the polar solvent (water) while the non-polar hydrocarbon chain dissolves onto the non-polar grease, oil or dirt

Q

Why are detergents sometimes used instead of soap?

A

Soap doesn’t function in hard water as the surfactant ion precipitates out with the calcium and magnesium ions in the water. Detergents don’t due to their sulfate group and functions in all types of water
