Based on the direct processing of raw materials. Located close to them
Assembling industry
They put together parts and components that have been made elsewhere. Wider choice of location than processing(footloose)
Difference between heavy and light industries?
Heavy industries produce large and heavy products. Processes and machinery are also heavy.
Light industries produce small or light consumer goods
Difference between capital and labor intensive?
Capital intensive: more focused on investment in the plant and machinery. Fewer workers in comparison to this investment.
Labor intensive: high number of workers compared to the investment in the plant and machinery
Transnational company/corporation
A company that has factories and offices in several countries and is global because is operates across national boundaries.
What is industrial agglomeration?
The clustering together of economic activities.
Why does industrial agglomeration occur?
The success of one attracts other companies from the same industry group
What is an industrial estate/park / trading estate?
An area zoned and planned for the purpose of industrial development
What is a science park?
An estate with high tech industries and a university link. It has an edge of city location
What is a business park?
Developments containing groups of offices used for commerce and business enterprises. Located at the edge of cities
