Q

What are the functions of Phosphorus

A

-The second most abundant mineral in the body after calcium. 85% is combined with CALCIUM- to form CALCIUM PHOSPHATE- gives strength to bones and teeth
-Part of the nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)- form of phosphoric acid- these carry INSTRUCTIONS for NEW CELL FORMATION and necessary for GROWTH (children)
-Many ENZYMES and B VITAMINS need phosphorus to function- key to METABOLISM of macronutrients

Q

What is a Deficiency in Phosphorus?

A

-cause bone disorders- RICKETS (children) and OSTEOMALACIA (adults)
-Improper balance of Phosphorus and Calcium- OSTEOPOROSIS
-Reduced Phosphate CONCENTRATION in blood- HYPOPHOSPHATEMIA

Q

What is an excess of Phosphorus?

A

-Too much carbonated drinks (coke)- cause problems- phosphorus content
-Interfere with IRON absorption- annoy the CALCIUM/ PHOSPHORUS RATION (1:1)- ability to use Calcium is REDUCED
