Major Organ Systems Flashcards
(11 cards)
cardiovascular system
transports nutrients, chemical messengers, gases, and wastes in blood
organs: heart and blood vessels
respiratory system
adds oxygen to blood and removes carbon dioxide from blood
organs: nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs
digestive system
breaks down food into units that can be absorbed into the body, and eliminates waste and non-digestive fibers
urinary system
removes nitrogenous wastes; maintains body fluid volume, pH, and electrolyte balance
organs: kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra
integumentary system
provides a protective barrier for the body, produces vitamin D, and contains sensory receptors for pain, touch, and temperature regulation
organs: skin, skin structures (hair, nails, sweat & oil glands)
lymphatic and immune system
returns fluid to cardiovascular system; detects and eliminates disease-causing organisms
organs: lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, tonsils
skeletal system
protects major organs; provides support for body movement
organs: bones & cartilage
muscular system
moves bones and maintains posture
organs: skeletal muscles & tendons
nervous system
controls cell function with the electrical system, helps control body homeostasis
organs: brain, spinal cord, nerves
endocrine system
controls cell function with hormones, helps control body homeostasis
organs: hypothalamus, pituitary gland, pineal gland, thymus, thyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal glands, ovaries, testes
reproductive system
produces gametes; female uterus provides environment for development of fetus
male organs: testes, ductus deferens, penis
female organs: ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina
