Major Pathogens + Characteristics Flashcards
(34 cards)
Staph Aureus
GPC; grape like clusters; beta hemolytic; catalase +; coagulase+; can be grown
Strep Pyogenes
GPC; chains; catalase -; beta hemolytic; Group A Strep; can be grown
Enterococcus
GPC; chains; very drug resistant; can be grown
Neisseria meningitidis
GNC; capsulated; can receive vaccine; has LPS + endotoxin; requires CO2; can be grown
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
GNC; no vaccine; has LPS + endotoxin; requires CO2; can be grown
Listeria Monocytogenes
GPR; aerobic; teichoic acid in CW; can cross placenta; can be grown (in refrigerated temps)
Corynebacterium Diptheriae
GPR; aerobic; usually respiratory infections; toxigenic disease; teichoic acid in CW; can be grown
Bacillus anthracis
GPR; sporeforming; teicoic acid in CW; biohazard; can be grown but isnt
Escherichia coli
GNR; facultative intracellular; part of normal flora; can be grown
Salmonella enterica
GNR; facultative intracellular; live in vacuole; can be grown
Shigella dysenteriae
GNR; facultative intracellular; escapes vacuole; actin motility: can be grown
Other Enterobacteriaceae
Yersinia, Aeromonas, Klebsiella; GNR; LPS + Endotoxin; facultative intracellular; can be grown
Bordetella pertussis
requires special growth medium; GNCB; can be grown
Pseudomonas
very antibiotic resistance; non fermentative; opporunistic pathogen; GNR; can be grown
Vibrio
cholerae, vulnificus, parahemolyticus; GN curved rods; marine bacteria; can be grown
Haemophilus
GNCB; person-person contact; need specific growth factors to grow (X (heme) and V (NAD) factor)
Campylobacter
GN spiral shaped; requires special growth media
Mycobacterium tuberculosis
AF; contains mycolic acid in CW; slow growing
mycobacterium leprae
AF; contain mycolic acid in CW; not grown in lab
Rickettsia
GNR; obligate intracellular pathogen; grows in cytoplasm; arthropod vector; cant be grown in lab
Chalmydia
GN; obligate intracellular; grows in vacuoles; transmitted via direct contact; can’t be grown in lab
Coxiella
GN; grows in acidified phagolysosome; airborne/inhalation; obligate intracellular; can’t be grown in lab
Bacteroides
GNR anaerobe
Clostridium botulinum
GPR; anaerobe; spore former; causes toxigenic disease
