Male & Female Reproductive System Flashcards
(35 cards)
Reproductive System
Includes physical structures, hormones, and secretions. Works in tandem with the endocrine system.
Male Reproductive System
Purpose is to generate male gametes(sperm) and deliver them to the female reproductive system. Components are: penis, vas deferens, urethra, prostate, seminal vesicles, testes and scrotum.
Testes
The male gonads. The organs that produce sperm. Primary reproductive organs. Inside testes are seminiferous tubules in which sperm are produced.
Seminiferous tubules
Found inside testes where sperm are produced.
Scrotum
Sac that houses testes outside and away from body to lower temperature during sperm production. The lower temperature provides perfect environment for sperm to mature. If they grow at body temp, sperm dont mature properly.
Prostate
Produce the fluids necessary for lubricating and nourishing the sperm. The gland in males that controls the release of urine and secretes a portion of semen that enhances motility and fertility of sperm.
Seminal Vesicles
Produce fluids necessary for nourishing and lubricating the sperm.
Vas Deferens
The duct in which sperm moves from a testicle to the urethra.
Urethra
The duct that delivers urine from the urinary bladder to the outside of the body.
Penis
Organ for the elimination of urine and sperm from the male body.
Sperm
Male gametes
Female Reproductive System
Primary role is to generate female gametes( ova, or eggs), fertilization (conception), implantation (start of pregnancy), gestation (pregnancy), and parturition (birth). Include ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, labia minora and majora, and clitoris.
Ovaries
The female gonads. Organs in which eggs are produced for reproduction
Fallopian Tubes
Also known as oviducts. Tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.
Uterus
The womb. Menstrual Cycle happens here.
Cervix
The lower, narrow end of the uterus (womb) that connects the uterus to the vagina (birth canal). The cervix allows fluids, such as menstrual blood, to pass from the uterus into the vagina. It also widens during the birth of a baby.
Labia Minora and Majora
The labia minora are a pair of small skin folds that extend from the clitoris to the vulva vestibule. The labia majora are a prominent pair of cutaneous skin folds that will form the lateral longitudinal borders of the vulval clefts.
Clitoris
the sensitive area located on the top of your vulva
Vagina
The canal that connects the external genitals to the cervix in the female. Serves as the female copulatory organ and birth canal by connecting to uterus and cervix.
Fallopian Tubes
Tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. Connect the ovaries to the uterus.
Hormone
A chemical messenger produced by a gland and transported by the bloodstream that regulates specific processes in the body.
Follicle
Saclike structure that contains and allows for maturation of the female ovum (egg) within the ovary.
Zygote
Fertilized egg with full set of genetic material resulting from merging of egg and sperm nuclei.
Blastocyst
Zygote undergoes several divisions into a ball and might undergo implantation.
