The epic of sundiata

A

-Sundiata was called the lion prince, the founder of the Mali empire
-Famous story in west africa about the lion prince and how he founded the empire, told by griots, west african storytellers and historians
-Told verbally by storytellers and historians 1300’s till it was written by french authors 1900’s
-Sundiata was a muslim ruler
-This term is name of the story and was told/spread for hundreds of years

A

-Massive trading city in mali empire, important for trans saharan trade from 1000-1450 CE, might have been capital city
-Big part of tst first city you would hit crossing saharan desert
-Became major islamic center, uni of sankore is here
-Camels and caravans would be stopping to trade gold, salt, etc
-Enslaved people sold
-When mansa musa returned from his hajj, he brought arabic architects to build all types of buildings

-Twelve kings swore allegiance by putting their spears in the ground.
-Kings became regional rulers, governing their own regions and paying tribute to the Mali Empire.
-Part of the Mali Empire’s political structure, used effectively by rulers like Sundiata and Mansa Musa.

Trans saharan trade 700 to 1600 CE

A

-Lots of important trade. The camel was important for transporting goods across the desert and spread islam and other religions due to its ability to travel long distances without water.
-Goods traded included gold, salt, cotton, textiles, and enslaved persons.
-Trade routes extended from the Mediterranean Sea to the kingdoms of Ghana and Songhay (around 1000 CE).
-The trade facilitated the spread of Islam and cultural exchanges.

Trade goods in the kingdom of zimbabwe

The bantu migrations in Africa

A

-The Bantu were eager to spread throughout Africa.
-They brought agriculture and iron tools when moving around.
-diffusion in agricultural practices, such as irrigation and using iron tools to clear forests and plow fields, had a significant environmental impact, leading to deforestation and river usage for irrigation.
-The Bantu language spread and became root for over 500 languages.
-Today, over 90 million people speak Bantu languages, including Swahili
