Q

What is the difference between a cross bite and functional shift?

A

cross bites have abnormal buccal-lingual relation between opposing teeth in centric relation

functional shifts undergo a midline compensatory or habitual shift when the teeth occlude in cross bite

Q

Why is a cotton ball used to diagnose a functional shift in cross bites?

A

If placing the cotton ball at midline, we can see if it lined up or shifted to the side before and after biting

Q

How do slow vs rapid skeletal expanders work?

A

slow expansion starts working when first placed but then stops working over time
rapid expansion is activated the more you keep working oral cavity

16
Q

If you put a palatal expander after the palate is fused around age 5, what will you move?

A

only teeth
because palate has already fused

17
Q

What do you do if you need to expand the palate, but the bones have already fused?

A

surgery is required. Can only move the palate when the bones have an open suture

18
Q

What is pseudo class III?

A

presence of an anterior crossbite due to a forward functional displacement of the mandible

maxillary incisors give degree of retroclination, and the mandibular incisors are proclined

19
Q

In which class are upper incisors proclined?

A

class II division I

20
Q

In which class are upper central incisors lingual inclined and can be overlapped by upper lateral incisors?

A

class II division II

21
Q

In which class is there excessive overjet and deep overbite?

A

class II division I

22
Q

In which class is there deep overbite?

A

class II division II

23
Q

In which class has a shorter upper lip?

A

class II division I

24
Q

In which class is there an underdeveloped mandible?

A

class II division I
