Mammary Glands
A dome-shaped muscle that is attached to the lower ribs and that functions as the main muscle in respiration.
Diaphragm
An animal that can use body heat from chemical reactions in the body’s cells to maintain a constant body temperature.

It keeps mammals warm.

They are used to cut.
Incisors
They are used for stabbing.
Canines
They are used for grinding.

Reproduction in which the sex cells from two parents unite to produce offspring that share traits from both parents.
Sexual Reproduction
The structure that attaches a developing fetus to the uterus and that enables the exchange of nutrients, wastes, and gases between the mother and the fetus.

In mammals, the length of time between fertilization and birth.
Gestation Period
They have unique backbones that have special connections between the vertebrae.
Anteaters/Armadillos/Sloths
Examples are: Moles, Shrews, and Hedgehogs. They have long pointed noses that help them smell their food.
Insectivores
They have sensitive whiskers. Examples are: Mice, Rats, and Squirrels.
Rodents
They have sharp gnawing teeth.
Rabbits/Hares/Pikas
They use echoes to find their food. Examples are: Bats.
Flying Mammals
Examples are: Cats, Dogs, and Bears. They have large canine teeth and special molars.
Carnivores
Examples are: Elephants. They pick up food and spray water with their trunk.
Trunk-Nosed Mammals
Examples are: Horses, Pigs, and Deer. They are fast runners.
Hoofed Mammals
Examples are: Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises. They have lungs and they nurse their young.
Cetaceans
They use their front flippers and a tail to swim slowly through the water.
Manatees and Dugongs
Examples are: Monkeys, Apes, and Humans. They have a large brain and they live in trees.
Primates
A mammal that lays eggs.
Monotremes
A mammal that carries and nourishes its young in a pouch.
Marsupials
