Who is eligible for MEDICARE?
Patients greater than 65 or those with permanent disabilities.
We have to CARE for those who can’t take CARE of themselves.
Who is eligible for MEDICAID?
Patients with low income.
They are able to take care of themselves so they don’t need medicare BUT they have low income so they need AID
What is an Occupational Therapist?
Helps patients regain skills (ADLs). You call them when your patient needs help learning how to feed themselves after a stroke or learning how to hold things again.
What is.a Physical Therapist?
Plans care for patient who need help with increasing musculoskeletal functions such as walking. Think big movements.
Patient has Dysphagia, who do you call?
Speech-Language Pathologist. They teach techniques and exercises for patient who need help with speech, language, and swallowing
What is Unintentional Tort?
Negligence or Malpractice. You didn’t need mean to fuck up, but you did anyway. Ex: Esme did a Medmath error and unintentionally hurt the patient.
What is Quasi-intentional Tort?
Breach of Confidentiality or Defamation of character. Think of me. I broke confidentiality by telling everyone the patients diagnosis and I told the patients husband that the wife is unfaithful so I can get at him (defamation)
What is Intentional Tort?
Assault, Battery, or False Imprisonment.
Define Assault
The conduct of one person makes another fearful.
Ex: a threat.
Think ASS, that ass threatened my daughter
Define Battery
Intentional and wrongful physical contact that involves injury or offensive contact.
Ex: a nurse restrains a patient and forces unwanted injection.
Think BAT, Pam hit Manny with a BAT and was charged with BATtery.
Define False Imprisonment
Person confined or restrained against his will.
Ex: all 4 side rails up
Define Advance Directives
Patient’s wishes of end of life care, should they not be able to do some themselves
Think DIRECTions given in ADVANCE
What are the types of Advance Directives?
Living Will, Durable Power of Attorney, and Provider’s Orders.
Providers orders is when the DR. prescribes a DNR or AND (allow natural death) after talking to patient and family.
Nurses have the legal responsibility to report what?
Abuse and Communicable diseases to the CDC
When does Discharge planning begin?
At the date of admission.
