Mangawhai-Pakiri coastline Flashcards
(4 cards)
location of the coastline
New Zealand
20 km from Mangawhai, a small harbour settlement in the north, to Pakiri, a rural beach community in the south.
North island of New Zealand
In the Auckland region, 50 km from the city, on the Eastern coast
Sand Mining - positives
Very coarse and clean which makes it ideal for construction
Auckland makes up for 35% of the country’s economy so construction is needed
Beach replenishment - 2015 saw 2.3 million foreign visitors to Auckland
Sand Mining - negatives
75,000 m3/year being mined
closed system so none of it is being replenished
the trenches made to mine the sand are being replenished by the beach’s sand, making the beach flat and wide. this then causes there to be less protection from coastal erosion and has led to dunes being eroded and a loss of vegetation
Ways to manage and mitigate the impacts
Groynes have been implemented - not enough to combat the effects of dredging
McCallum brothers have invested in equipment which helps water clarity, low emission engines, electric pumps, and other equipment which minimise air and noise pollution
Save our Sands movement - campaigning to maintain the coastline and stop the dredging
