Why do they call it Avenue of the Americas?

A

“Avenue of the Americas” is the official name for Sixth Avenue in New York City because Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia renamed it in 1945 to honor the nations of the Western Hemisphere and promote Pan-American ideals, with the intention of signifying the importance of immigrants from those countries to the city; the name change was accompanied by lamppost medallions displaying the seals of various American countries, although most New Yorkers still commonly refer to it as “Sixth Avenue”.
