Manufactuing Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is Manufactuing Technologically
The application of phys/chem processes to alter the geometry, properties, appearance of a starting material to make products; includes assembly.
What is manufactuing Economically
The transformation of materials into items of greater value by one or more processing/assembly operations.
What is Primary manufactuing
cultivate and exploit natural resources, e.g., agriculture, mining
What is Secondary manufactuing
take the outputs of primary industries and convert them into consumer and capital goods
What is Tertiary manufactuing
service sector. Insurace, Banking, Education, Real estate, resturant, Tourism
Solidificaion process
casting
Particulate processing
Sintering
Shaping process
solidification, particulate, defomation, metarial removal
deformation processes
exceed the yeild strength
material removeal processes
Remove excess materiasl - turning drilling milling.
net shape processes
little to not waste, no machining
near net shape processes
minimal cmahcining required
Property enhancing
They improve mechanical or physical properties. Part shape is not altered. heat treatments - glass & metal.
Surface processing opertions
surfae treatments, cleaning, coating and thin film deposition
assembly opeartions
permicant joining or mechanical fastening.
perminant joining processes
welding, brazing, soldering, adhesive bonding
Computer-integrated manufacturing
involves the computerized integration of all aspects of product design, process planning, production, and distribution, as well as the management and operation of the whole manufacturing organization
Additive manufactuing
the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies
Low carbon steels
less than 0.20% C Applications: automobile sheet metal parts, plate steel for fabrication
Medium carbon steels
between 0.20% and 0.50% C Applications: machinery components and engine parts such as crankshafts and connecting rods
High carbon steels - greater than 0.50% C
Applications: springs, cutting tools and blades, wear-resistant parts
