A

Sacred, restriction, prohibition, a supernatural condition

A supernatural condition where a person, place, or object is dedicated to an atua (spiritual being) and moves from the profane to the sacred.

Becomes untouchable, no longer for common use.

Violating tapu could cause retribution (sickness, catastrophe, even death).

Karakia (prayers) and ceremonies could mitigate consequences.

Tapu was used to regulate behavior towards people and the environment, ensuring social order and flourishing.

Tapu could be applied by rangatira (chiefs) or tohunga (experts/priests) as channels of the atua.

Communities respected tapu out of fear of divine punishment.

Intrinsic (primary) tapu: Things that are inherently sacred.

Extensions of tapu: Restrictions from contact with something intrinsically tapu.

Noa:

The lifting/removal of tapu, often through water, food, and karakia.
