6
Q

When calculating the area of a feature on a topographic map, how do you count the squares?

A

DO count number of squares more than half covered by feature, ignore those less than half covered. Count all fully covered.

13
Q

How to express answer for density in the correct units?

A

Number of features per square kilometre
e.g. 7/km2
Make sure topo grid squares are 1cm2 using scale.

16
Q

How to determine aspect?

A

Draw lines perpendicular to 2 parallel contour lines, then figure out which is lower (downhill).

17
Q

How to calculate bearings?

A

Angle measured clockwise that a line makes with a fixed zero line which is always north (unless stated otherwise). e.g. bearing of A from B is 200 degrees.

18
Q

How to calculate sight line?

A

Draw line between 2 points, see if higher point between them.

19
Q

Define gradient

A

Steepness of a slope expressed as a ratio

20
Q

How to calculate gradient?

A

Rise (vertical height) : run (horizontal distance).
Need to get rise to 1 (divide by itself)

21
Q

What is 1km squared in hectares?

22
Q

How many metres in 1 hectare?

A

10 000 m squared

23
Q

Latitude of North/South Pole?

A

90 degrees north/south

24
Q

Latitude of Tropic of Cancer?

A

23.5 degrees N

25
Latitude of Tropic of Capricorn?
23.5 degrees S
26
Latitude Arctic Circle?
66.5 degrees N
27
Latitude of Antarctic Circle
66.5 S
28
Most important line of longitude?
Prime Meridian
29
How many minutes in 1 degree?
60
30
What is vertical exaggeration?
how much a cross-section has been stretched (exaggerated) by the vertical scale
31
How to calculate vertical exaggeration?
Horizontal scale divided by vertical scale (same units)
32
How to write answer for vertical exaggeration?
NO units- just '10 times'
33
If the horizontal scale is 1000m and the vertical is 10m, what is the vertical exaggeration?
100 times
34
How do you calculate the length of the horizontal axis for cross sections?
Same measurement as the distance between the 2 points on the map
35
Define transect
A series of symbols used to show relationships between different features between two points on topographic map. Use same scale as the map.
