MAPWORK Flashcards
(28 cards)
WHAT IS BEARING
a direction given as an angle measured from north in a clockwise direction
WHAT IS TRUE BEARING
an angle between 0 and 360 degrees measured from the true north line to the line joining the two places that are given in the question
MAGNETIC BEARING
an angle measured from the magnetic north line to the line joining the two places that are given in the question
MAGNETIC DECLINATION
the angle given in degrees between true north and magnetic north
TRUE NORTH
is the geographical north pole
MAGNETIC NORTH
the direction that a compass gives as north. it is not the same as true north
IN SOUTH AFRICA
magnetic north is always found to the west of true north
SCALE
- what is a world scale
“1cm on the map represents 50000cm or o,5km on the ground”
SCALE
- what is a ratio scale
“1:50 000”
SCALE
- what is a line scale
the line has to be measured
DISTANCE
- topographic maps
for every 1cm on the map it represents 50 0000cm in reality
DISTANCE
- orthophoto maps
for every 1cm on the map it represents 10 000cm in reality
WHAT IS AREA
area is the amount of surface occupied by a feature
WHAT IS COORDINATES
give the exact position of a place or feature on a map
WHAT IS LATITUDE
- given in degrees
- point north or south (eqautor)
- lines drawn horizontally
WHAT IS LONGITUDE
- given degrees
- point east or west (greenwhich meridian)
- lines drawn vertically
HOW DOES ALTITUDE WORK
- the height or altitude of a place on a map is given in meters
- gives an indication of the relief or shape of the land and wether its steep or gentle gradient
HOW ARE THEY INDICATED
- spot height
- bench marks
- trigonometrical beacons
- contour lines
WHAT IS A SPOT HEIGHT
a dot on a map with a num next to it, indicating the height
WHAT IS A BENCHMARK
height shown along a road or railway line indicated by an arrow and a number representing the height
WHAT IS A TRIGONOMETRICAL BEACON
a physical marker of height that is built on land. every beacon has a specific number (top) and a num representing the height (bottom)
WHAT IS CONTOUR LINES
a line drawn on a topographic map to indicate elevation
TYPES OF COUNTOUR LINES
- even slope
- gentle slope
- steep slope
- stepped slope
- vertical slope
- convex slope
- concave slope
- valley
- spur
- pass
- poort or water gap
- ridge and saddle
- watershed
- mesa
- butte
WHAT IS GRADIENT
measure of steepness
