What is a contour map
Represents the rise and fall of the land
How is spot heights represented
Black dot with the height next to it

An arrow next to roads or railways

Triangle with beacon number to the right and height underneath

Imaginary lines drawn on a map joining places of equal height above sea level

What is a uniform slope
Contour lines are all equal spread out
What is a gentle slope
Contour lines are far apart
What is a steep slope
Contour lines are close together

Contour lines are close then far then close then far etc

Bottom contours are close together and the top ones are far apart
What is a concave slope
Contours are far apart at the bottom and close at the top
What is a vertical slope
Contours overlap
What is the difference between a spur and valley
Spur - the top of the V points to lower ground
Valley - tip of the V points to higher ground
What is a watershed
A dotted line that crosses over mountain tops to divide rivers
What is the difference between waterfalls and rapids
Rapids - contour lines are close together on a river
Waterfalls - contour lines merge on a river
What is a saddle compared to a pass or a gap
Saddle - few contour lines between mountain tops
Pass - lots of contour lines between mountain tops
Gap - river between mountain tops
What is map scale
Represents the relationship between the side of the map and the size of the actual land which is represented on the map
