Sex before marriage
Bad :
“Foundation of family life” - married couple is better environment for children
“Grave sin” - Catechism of RCC
Cohabiting relationship lasts 3 years whereas marriage lasts 11 years, having sex before relationship will lead people to appreciate it less and won’t go through with a marriage
Good :
Pope Francis (influential) allowed the marriage of a woman who already had a baby, despite it being against Christian views
50% of marriages end in divorce, can have sex without the pain of a bad relationship
Cohabitation can be seen as a trial marriage, so sex is okay
Marriage service
Exchanging vows committing each other for life
Exchanging rings as a sign of the everlasting nature of the relationship
Praying for God’s blessing on the relationship
“What God has joined together, let no man tear asunder”
Divorce
RCC :
Annulment is okay if they were forced into marriage, sexual intercourse did not take place after, they did not know what they were doing, were under the influence
NO WAY JOSÉ
“Any man who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery”
Marriage is a sacrament made before God, should not be broken
A marriage should not end “for any other reason than death”
CofE :
Divorce is allowed
Divorced people are sometimes allowed to remarry
Humans can make mistakes and relationships don’t always work, starting again is healthy
Scottish Protestant Church :
Marriage is not a sacrament so divorce is allowed
Quakers :
Divorce is allowed as people should be able to start relationships again
Divorced are allowed to remarry
Contraception
Secular :
Don’t want to transmit STDs
Lifestyle that is not compatible with children
Becoming pregnant would be harmful to the health of the mother
One or both partners carry a genetically inherited condition
They consider themselves too old/young to have children
They want to plan their own family in their own time
RCC :
NO WAY JOSÉ
Contraception prevents humans from fulfilling God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply”
Sex was given by God for procreation
Contraception encourages promiscuity and the spread of STDs
“All sperm is sacred”
No masturbation either lol
CofE :
Doesn’t regard contraception as against God’s plans
Contraception can be used to protect the health of sexual partners
Reducing size of families gives children a better standard of living
Contraception allows sex to be free from fear of pregnancy and provide the couple with safe pleasure and 0rgazmz
Nothing in the Bible that states contraception is wrong
Family Life
Marriage provides ideal stable environment for children
“Children, obey your parents”
Parents have responsibility to care for their children, take them to be baptised, teach the about God and how to live and accept authority.
“Honour your mother and father” - Ten Commandments
“Grown children have responsibilities towards their parents” - Catechism of RCC
Churches provide a lot of support for families such as youth groups and advice councils
