Divorce

A

God’s Attitude
* Gen. 2:24 For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife…
* Deut. 24:1-4 Divorce for indecency-Permitted because of hard hearts. (Matt. 19)
* Hosea-Continued pursuit of reconciliation.
* Mal. 2:16 I hate divorce
* Matt. 19:6 What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.

Grounds
* Matt. 5:32 Every one who divorces his wife, except for the cause of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
* Matt. 19:9 Whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another commits adultery.
* I Cor. 7:15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases,. but God has called us to peace.

“Leaves” - Questionable as to whether this means “divorce”
* Matt. 19:6 “What therefore God has joined together let no man separate.” This is in the context of Gen. 2:24 where “leaving and cleaving” is physical separation.
* Acts 1:4 …He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem.
* Rom. 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of God?
* Philem. 15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a time.
In all other instances Paul uses this word in reference to physical separation.

“Not under bondage” - Questionable as whether this means free to remarry.
* Rom. 7:2 - Different idea. “bound” = used in reference to the believer, but not in reference to the marriage illustration.
* “not a servant under” does not mean the same thing as “free to remarry.”
* It could mean not under bondage to win the unbelieving spouse to Christ.

The word remarriage or a similar term is absent from the verse. In vs. 39 of the same chapter Paul uses “free to be married.”

If the deserted believer chooses to remarry there is no possibility of reconciliation.

This unclear text should be interpreted in light of Matt. 5, and 19.

Few if any advocates of this view are willing to counsel remarriage in this type of situation without the unbeliever either remarrying first or fornicating.

Questionable enough
