Education mirrors the world of work.

Education is designed to justify inequality by stating failure is due to a lack of hard work rather than inequality
Bowles and Gintis - The Hidden Curriculum
Consist of things pupils learn informally to reproduce submissive work force
Bowles and Gintis - Surplus of skilled labour
Children are taught more than they need to know. The w/c are scared to lose their jobs so are willing to work for low wages
Bowles and Gintis Criticisms
- They can’t prove the hidden curriculum exists
- Why do apprenticeships exist if education prepares us for work
- Not all students are obedient/ passive - Willis W/c lads
Willis - 12 w/c lads
Boys actively chose to fail to work their dream jobs as factory workers - joined anti school subcultures.
Willis criticisms
- Small sample size/ lacks generalisability
- Only focuses on boys
- Lads could have lied
