What is capitalism
An economic system - trade and industry are controlled by private owners
What is class conflict?
Conflict between the classes, caused by exploitation
What are the Bourgeoisie?
The middle class - the ruling class has power over the subject class in western society.
What are the proletariat?
The social class with no significant ownership, made up of workers who sell their labour to the capitalists.
What is an ideology?
Cultural beliefs that justify particular social arrangements and patterns of inequality, often used by dominant groups to maintain their power
What is false consciousness?
When a society fails to acknowledge impacts a way of thinking that hinders a person from perceiving true social/ economic realities.
What is the myth of meritocracy?
refers to the idea that social inequality is based on individual merit (ability and effort) rather than on social class, wealth, or other privileged factors.
What is the ideological state apparatus?
The media, the education system, and religion slowly shaping the way society thinks
What is the hidden curriculum?
Norms and values that are taught indirectly
(e.g. school uniform = conforming)
What is repression?
Restricting/ controlling a society or group
What is conformity?
A form on social influence that changes common belief
What is hegemony?
The dominance/ leadership over one group
What is deschooling?
the process of transitioning away from formal, institutionalized schooling towards alternative learning environments, such as homeschooling or unschooling
