What are the three types of feminists and describe them.
Liberal-optimistic about the possibility of change, but believe these changes in media lag behind actual changes in society.
Radical-believe nothing has changed in the media and the media is ‘male stream’
Marxist-view that the media representations of women a products of both patriarchy and capitalism.
What do marxist believe ?
That the media is a part of the superstructure of society and that it supports base, which is controlled by the bourgeoise.
What do neo-marxist believe?
Similar to marxist but believe there is a middle class and they are doing it subconsciously.
What are 5 things PM believe?
Diversity and Choice, Media Saturation, Globalisation, Blurred Boundaries, Hyper Reality
What are the representations of women in the media?
Women are not shown as much, women shown in traditional role and women shown as sex objects
What is a research for women shown in traditional role?
Ferguson(1983) women are represented in the media in traditional roles, with a focus on ‘him,home and looking good’
What do feminists believe?
They believe that the media has acted as a key agent of socialisation and reinforced the view that women are more emotionally homemakers and less rational.
What is the media representation of masculinity?
Myth of men as possessing strength, competitive spirit and aggression and violence of the basis of biological predisposition.
What research did Easthorpe do?
Easthorpe (1990)- found the representations of men to be masculine etc. to be evident in hollywood films and in computer games.
Name a sociologist that suggests ethnic minorities are not represented diversely.
Malik(2008)-Not shown as much
Believed that the media did not represent ethnic diversity in the UK. Stated that ethnic minorities are declining to watch mainstream TV. Found out that most white viewers think that ethnic minorities are represented equally and are doing a satisfactory job although ethnic minorities have the opposite view.
How was youth represented in the early ages?
Osgerby (2002) -during 1950s and 60s youth was represented positively in the media to a background of postwar hope.
What is a study to show youth being represented as deviant?
- Osgerby(2008)- ‘youth as trouble’ e.g. Waterloo Road
- Wayne (2007)-analysed 2000 newspaper articles looking at young people. 82% focused on young people involved in crime.
What did Biggs say about old representation?
They said that there is evidence of changing in the representations of older people. They are appearing in a considerate no. of soap operas. A view towards a more active older person.
What is the media representation of under class?
- represented negatively
- portrayed as a threat to societies norms and values
What theory supports the direct effect theory?
Hypodermic syringe model -effect of the media on the audience is immediate and powerful. The audience is powerful and unable to resist the message.
What is a study for the hypodermic syringe model?
Bandura(Social Learning Theory)-the kids are influenced by the adults when they start abusing the bobo doll and the imitate their actions because the audience is passive and unable to resist the message . This shows that people who see violence in the media are more likely to show aggressive acts.
What is the two step flow model?
- sees the effect of the media on the audience coming through interaction between people.
- everyone experiences the media directly but may be influenced by someone else to reject, modify or accept the media message.

What is the cultural effects theory?
- argues that the media effects the attitudes and behaviour of different social groups in different ways depending on their cultural background.

Bennett(middle aged punks) -opinion leader got influenced by media and peer followed, adapted or reject the style and opinions of the opinion leader.

Becker(2002)Fijan Girls-After the introduction of television to Fiji, girls were three times more likely to show signs of eating disorders than before t.v. was introduced.
What is the new representation of men?
The ‘newman’(metrosexual) -takes an interest in personal grooming and fashion, and undertakes new roles within the home and society.
