MatBal for Multi-unit System Flashcards
(15 cards)
a graphical representation of a process
process flowsheet (flowchart)
used for troubleshooting, control of operating conditions, and optimization of process performance
process flowsheet (flowchart)
a flowsheet of the process indicating the equipment of sequence and the flow of materials
block diagram
portion of the overall process system that is isolated or selected for focused analysis
subsystem
subsystem consists of either the following
- single process unit
- group of interconnected units
a unit where two or more input streams are combined to form a single output stream
mixer
key characteristics of a mixer
- no reaction or phase change occurs
- output is a homogeneous mixture of the inputs
- mass is conserved
a unit where a single input stream is divided into two or more output streams
splitter
key characteristics of a splitter
- no reaction, phase change, or separation by composition
- the composition of all output streams is the same as the feed stream
- often used to control flow to different units
a unit where a mixture is separated into two or more output streams, each with a different composition
separator
key characteristics of a separator
- separates based on properties like boiling point (distillation), density (settling), or solubility
- no reaction occurs
- total mass is conserved, but composition differs among output streams
a stream that returns a portion of unreacted materials or intermediate products back to an earlier process unit
recycle system
purpose of the recycle system
- increase conversion
- improve separation efficiency
- reduce waste
- control composition or flow
a stream that skips one or more stages of the process and goes directly to another downstream stage
bypass
a stream bled off from the process to remove an accumuation of inerts or unwanted material that might otherwise build up in the recycle stream with time of operation
purge
