materials 2 Flashcards
(17 cards)
define manufacturing processes
the means by which raw materials are converted into usable components in 2 fundamental stages : primary and secondary
what does near net shape principal mean
the manufacture of a part to the finished size in one operation or alternatively with the minimum number of ops or secondary finishing operations according to the degree of precision required and the function of the part.
whats product tolerance
allowable size range specified in the design and drawing
whats process tolerance
size range limits that are likely to occur due to the method of manufacture
what are reasons for process tolerance? (3points)
1.nature of the manufacturing process
2. variability in material
3. wear on tools and machines
what are the fundemental requirements of a manufacturing organisation? (5 points)
1, men
2. materials
3. machinery
4. money
5. measurements
types of processes for metals
(5 points)
1.welding
2. deformation
3. casting
4.material removal
5. powder metallurgy
whats casting?
pouring liquid metal into moulds using near net shape principles
whats deformation?
applying force to produce desired shape e.g. forging and presswork
whats powder metallurgy?
using compacted particulate material in die
whats welding?
joining parts together by heat and/or a filler metal
whats material removal?
cutting to size/shape
whats metrology?
the science of measurement of dimensions and shapes
what are the two types of material standards of length?
‘line standard’ e.g. ruler and tapes
‘end standards’ e.g. end bars, slip gauges and ring gauges
what are slip gauges?
boxed set of precision ground steel blocks with high levels of accuracy
name some common measurement instruments (3 points)
- micrometer
- caliper
- dial indicator
