Materials And Electricity Flashcards
(10 cards)
Factors in galvanic corrosion
Humidity, anode to cathode surface area ratio, metal types, temperature, salinity
Galvanic corrosion
Corrosion that occurs when two metals are in electrical contact with one another
Galvanic serries
An ordered list of materials that describe (from noble to active) metals that resist galvanic corrosion
Passivicity
The ability of a material to react with the atmosphere to produce a coating that protects it from corrosion
(ie: aluminum oxide)
Electrical properties of materials
Dielectric constant, dielectric strength, electrical conductivity, permiability, permativity, piezoelectric constants, seebeck coefficient
Dielectric constant (relative permativity)
Value that describes the extent to which the material concentrates electrostatic lines of flux
Ratio of electrical energy stored in the material to the electrical energy stored in a vaccuum
Dielectric strength
The maximum electromagnetic field the material can withstand without breaking down
Electrical conductivity
How strongly a material resists the flow of electrical current
Given in Ohm-meters
Permiability
The ability of a substance to support the formation of an electromagnetic field within itself
Permativity
The ability of a substance to resist the formation of an electromagnetic field within itself
