  • cover the area using clean towels and sheets
  • gather clean warm items such as towels that can be pre- warmed
  • use the maternity response pack

  • support the woman where she is most comfortable
  • provide support and be reassuring
  • encourage the mother to breath slowly
  • provide pain relief
  • allow babies head to be born slowly
  • avoiding touching the umbilical cord

A

the mother may report further contractions prior to the birth of the placenta

encourage her to adopt a squatting poison and catch the placenta in a bag or a bowl

keep it all together for a inspection by a midwife

A

palpate the mothers abdomen and feel the top of the uterus and massage firmly

what are the main things to remember with an emergency birth

A

if they experience contractions 1-2, do and visual inspection before pushing

allow baby’s head to take place slowly to avoid perineal trauma

ensure the baby is thoroughly dried and given skin to skin contact with mother as soon as possible
