A

A

Two people interact. Feeling of rapport grows between them. Based on compatibility and shared interests.

Explain the compatibility testing stage?

A

At a later stage in the relationship, the values, attitudes and goals of each person are examined. If the time before marriage has been too brief, this stage may not be competed. If compatibility is not fully tested before marriage, discrepancies may arise after marriage that can hurt the relationship.

What are the requirements of marriage?

A

ESSENTIAL:
1. Mental capacity
Both parties must be able to understand the nature of the ceremony and the duties and responsibilities created by marriage.
2. No prior marriages
In Canada monogamy is the only accepted form of marriage. Bigamy is illegal. Persona can legally remarry if their last marriage was ended by annulment, divorce, or death of a spouse. If spouse disappears and is absent for up to 7 years, surviving spouse may apply for “presumption of death certificate”
3. Genuine consent
Parties must freely and voluntarily give consent, asked before clergy or judge or marriage commissioner
4. Minimal age
14 for males 12 for females, covered by provincial legislation.
5. Sexual capacity
Must be able to consummate marriage.
6. Close relationship
A marriage between two people who are too closely related by either marriage or blood.

What are the requirements of marriage continued

A

FORMAL
1. Marriage license or banns
Any couple marrying must obtain a license or may have banns read in their place or worship(Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan). Fee charged for license. Couple must wait 3 days but no more than 3 months after obtaining license. Banns read at 2-3 weekly successive services, couple must wait 5 days after last reading. Banns not allowed if previously married.
2. Marriage ceremony
Must be performed by a legal authority: priest, minister, or rabbi in a religious ceremony and a judge, justice of the peace, marriage commissioner in a civil ceremony.
Person conduction must announce the couple man and wife
3. Minimum age
In Ontario couple can marry at 18 without parental consent, 16 with. Quebec is the only province to allow males at 14 and females at 12 to marry without consent.
4. Tests
Some provinces require blood tests in case of emergencies

A

Like a spiritual love, respect and justice. Self-sacrificing, non-demanding. Like a mothers love-unconditional. To be in love: to care about each other’s well being(agape), like each other’s personality and are friends (Philia), are sexually attracted to each other (eros).

What are the ideas of Ira Reis’ theory about love?

A
  1. Initial rapport
    Ability to relate to one another, to feel comfortable with one another, to communicate with one another.
  2. Disclosure
    Involved sharing feelings and personal experiences, openness with one another
  3. Feelings of mutual dependence
    As people do things together they begin to count on one another
  4. Trust
    Involves really knowing each other and finding fulfillment of personal needs ( if needs are fulfilled, then there is a feeling of rapport and the cycle is renewed).

What are the ideas of Robert Sternberg’s theory about love?

A

Romantic love has three faces: passion, intimacy, and commitment. The balance of all three may differ. Passion, strong feeling of sexual desire develops most quickly. Intimacy develops more slowly. Commitment grows as relationship grows.

Trends in cohabitation?

A

Cohabitation rates have risen as marriage rates decline.
More people are becoming open to the idea of Cohabitation. Usually people who enter cohabitation have come from a marriage that ended in divorce. It is an easy way to test out the relationship before getting married.

Trends in divorce?

A

Marriage declining, cohabitation increasing. Creates a lot of conflict between parent and child. Couple must live apart for one year before they can legally apply for divorce. Before ww1 Canada had the lowest divorce rate in the western world.

Trends in same sex marriage?

A

Some nations have legalized it however some have banned it due to religious reasons. 85% of hate crimes occurred in Toronto and Vancouver. Gay marriage legal in Canada. Same sex marriage rates are increasing as more places legalize it and people become more accepting to it.
