Distributive Property
8 X 11 = ( 8 X 10) + (8 X 1)
Multiply the addends of a number and then add the products
regroup
To use place value to exchange equal amounts when renaming a number.
* * * * * * = | * * = 12
* * * * * *
partial products
The products of each place value are found separately,
and then added together
348 X 6 = (300 + 40 + 6) X 6
300 X 6 = 1,800
40 X 6 = 240
8 X 6 = 48
1,800 + 240 + 48 = 2,088
Commutative Property of Multiplication
The order in which two numbers are multiplied does not change the product
3 X 6 = 6 X 3
dividend
a number that is divided
64 / 8 = 8
fact family
a group of related facts using the same numbers
4 X 7 = 28, 7 X 4 = 28
28 / 7 = 4, 28 / 4 = 7
Identity property of Multiplication
When any number is multiplied by 1, the product is that number
1 X 10 = 10 10 X 1 = 10
Associative Property of Multiplication
The grouping of the factors does not change the product
3 X (4 X 6) = (3 X 4) X 6
decompose
to break apart a number
6
6 X 1 = 6
2 X 3 = 6
1 X 6 = 6
Factors: 1,2,3,6
