(21 cards)
What is a fraction?
A way to show part of a whole. Example: ½
Numerator
The top number — how many parts you have.
Denominator
The bottom number — how many parts make a whole.
Proper fraction
The top number is smaller than the bottom.
Example: 3/4
Improper fraction
The top number is bigger than the bottom.
Example: 7/4
Mixed number
A whole number and a fraction together.
Example: 1 ½
Convert improper to mixed
Divide the top by the bottom.
Example: 7/4 = 1 ¾
Convert mixed to improper
Multiply whole by denominator and add numerator.
Example: 2 ⅓ = 7/3
Equivalent fractions
Fractions that are equal in value.
Example: ½ = 2/4 = 4/8
Simplifying fractions
Divide the top and bottom by the same number.
Example: 4/8 = 1/2
Add fractions with same denominator
Add the tops, keep the bottom.
Example: 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5
Subtract fractions with same denominator
Subtract the tops, keep the bottom.
Example: 5/8 − 2/8 = 3/8
Add fractions with different denominators
Find a common denominator first, then add.
1/3 + 1/6 = ?
Convert to common denominator: 2/6 + 1/6 = 3/6 = ½
Multiply fractions
Multiply tops together and bottoms together.
Example: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = ½
What does “reciprocal” mean?
Flip a fraction.
Example: Reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2
Divide fractions
Keep the first, flip the second, then multiply.
Example: 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6
What is 1 whole as a fraction?
Any fraction where top and bottom are the same.
Example: 4/4 or 7/7
Order these: 1/2, 1/4, 3/4
From smallest to biggest: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4
What is 3/5 of 20?
3/5 × 20 = 12
True or false: 2/4 = 1/2
True. They are equivalent fractions.
