Maths (yuck) Flashcards
All the equations we have to memorise (10 cards)
What is Hamilton’s rule?
rB>rC
relatedness to offspring x benefit of saving them (how many saved)
must be greater than
relatedness to own offspring x cost of losing them (how many lost)
What is the mathematical expression of growth rate?
r = b - m
Growth rate (r) is determined by vital rates; birth rate (b) and death rate (m)
Is per capita growth: individuals/individual/unit of time
How is number of births in a population expressed?
B = bN
Births = birth rate x population size
How is number of deaths in a population expressed?
D = mN
Deaths = death rate x population size
What is rmax?
The intrinsic rate of growth - which is the largest theoretical population growth possible
What is K?
The carrying capacity of a population
What is the population equation?
dN/dt = (rmax)(N)(K-N/K)
This equation multiplies growth effects by how close you are to the carrying capacity.
What is the Hardy-Weinberg law?
p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1
Where:
p^2 = homozygous dominant
2pq = heterozygotes
q^2 = homozygous recessive
What information does the Hardy-Weinberg law give?
Genotype frequencies
What is the equation for allele frequencies?
p + q = 1
Where:
p = dominant allele
q = recessive allele
