Matter Flashcards
(25 cards)
what is matter?
anything with mass or volume
what is volume?
the amount of space taken up, or occupied by an object
what is mass?
the amount of matter something is made of
what is matter made up of?
atoms
what are things that aren’t matter?
forms of energy- light, heat, lightning, etc/
extensive properties
a property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample (mass, volume)
intensive properties
a property that depends on the type of matter in a sample, not the amount of matter (color, texture, brittle, density)
physical properties
a quality or condition of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance’s composition (color, smell, temperature, shape, density, malleability, state/phase)
chemical properties
a property of matter that describes a substance’s ability to participate in chemical powers
three states of matter
solid, liquid, and gas
mixtures
two or more substances combined so that each substance retains its chemical identity
what are the two types of mixtures?
heterogenous, homogenous,
heterogenous mixtures
a mixture that is not uniform in composition, its components are easily distinguished
homogenous mixture
a mixture that is completely uniform in composition, its components are not easily distinguished. called a solution
what’s the difference between mixtures and pure substances?
mixtures can be separated while pure substances cannot
pure substances
has constant composition and distinct chemical properties (metal, nonmetal, and metalloid elements)
methods of separation
distillation, filtration, chromatography, evaporation,
distillation
purification process where liquid is evaporated and condensed again to a liquid
filtration
(strainer) separating liquids from soldis
chromatography
general name for a series of methods for separating mixtures by using a system with a mobile phase and a stationary phase
evaporation
vaporization that occurs at the surface of a liquid that is not boiling
sublimation
occurs when a solid changes directly to a gas (ice in freeze, carbon dioxide as dry ice)
element
a substance whose atoms are all chemically the same, containing a definite number of protons. the simplest form of matter with a unique set of properties. cant be broken down
compound
a pure substance that contains more than one element. can be broken down into a more simpler phase
