Matter and Change Flashcards
(21 cards)
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Extensive Properties
Depends on the amount of matter in a substance
Extensive Properties EXAMPLES
mass, volume, size, weight, length, etc.
Intensive Properties
Depends on the type of matter in a substance
Intensive Properties EXAMPLES
Boiling point, color, temperature, luster, hardness
Pure Substances
Have uniform and definite composition
Elements and Compounds
Element (PS)
Found on the periodic table
Compound (PS)
Formed when elements chemically combine
Mixtures
Physical blend of 2 or more components
Homogenous mixture
Solution
HAS uniform composition. cannot be “picked out”
Heterogenous mixture
NOT a uniform composition, can be “picked out”
Filtration
Filters solid particles from liquid (coffee filter)
Distillation
A way to separate dissolved substances
Physical properties
Characteristics observed without changing the substance into another substance.
Physical properties EXAMPLES
volume, mass, weight, density
Chemical properties
Characteristic only observed by changing it into a different substance.
Chemical properties EXAMPLES
Ability to burn, rust, or tarnish
Chemical change
A change in which a substance is changed into a different substance
Evidence that a chemical change has occured
Burn, rust, tarnish, or decomposition
List some elements
EX: Argon, Arsenic, Hydrogen
List some compounds
EX: Water, Rust, Isopropyl Alcohol
