Matter and its properties Flashcards
(30 cards)
what is matter?
matter is anything that occupies space, has mass, and volume
what is volume?
it is the amount of space that matter occupies
what are the two characteristics of matter?
- Physical Property
- Chemical Property
the composition of a substance does not change
physical property
the composition of a substance changes
chemical property
there are two classifications under physical property, what are those?
- Intensive
- Extensive
same regardless of the amount of matter
intensive
- color, density, shape, conductivity, boiling and freezing point, (literally everything that ends with ity)
intensive
changes with respect to the amount of matter
extensive
- mass, volume, length, width, height, weight
extensive
- flammability, tarnish, rust, decomposition
chemical property
what are the two types of matter?
- pure substance
- mixture
only one substance/property under the same condition
pure substance
components retain their individual properties, making it physically possible to separate them
mixture
2 kinds under pure substance
- elements
- compounds
- cannot be broken down into simpler substance by chemical
elements
- can be broken down into simpler substance by chemical
compounds
what are the 3 types of elements?
- metal
- nonmetal
- metalloid/semi-metal
- electricity and heat can travel through
- hard and strong
metal
- element between metal and non metal (combination)
metalloid
- poor with heat conduction
- dull and non reflective
non metal
2 types of compounds
- organic
- inorganic
made up of carbon and are bonded with atoms
organic
simple molecules that do not contain carbon-hydrogen bonds
inorganic
