Matter In Our Surroundings Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is matter?
Everything in the universe made up of material
Includes air, food, stones, clouds, stars, plants, animals, water, and sand.
What are the two physical properties of matter?
Mass and volume
Mass refers to the amount of matter, while volume refers to the space occupied by the matter.
What are the five basic elements classified by early Indian philosophers?
- Air
- Earth
- Fire
- Sky
- Water
This classification is known as the ‘Panch Tatva’.
What did ancient Greek philosophers believe about matter?
They had a similar classification of matter as early Indian philosophers
They also considered basic elements in understanding matter.
What is the SI unit of mass?
Kilogram (kg)
What is the SI unit of volume?
Cubic metre (m³)
What is the common unit for measuring volume?
Litre (L)
1 L = 1 dm³, 1 L = 1000 mL, 1 mL = 1 cm³.
Fill in the blank: Matter is made up of _______.
[particles]
What did the first school of thought believe about the nature of matter?
Matter is continuous like a block of wood
What did the second school of thought believe about the nature of matter?
Matter is made up of particles like sand
What happens to salt when dissolved in water, according to the activity?
Salt spreads throughout the water
The water level may not change significantly even though the salt dissolves.
What aspect of matter will be discussed in subsequent chapters?
Chemical aspects of matter
What is illustrated in Fig. 1.1?
Particles of salt get into the spaces between particles of water
What activity can be performed to observe the nature of matter?
Dissolve 2-3 crystals of potassium permanganate in 100 mL of water
