Matter: Property && Chnages Flashcards
(26 cards)
The study of matter and the changes it undergoes
Chemistry
What are the four stages of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas, & plasma
- particles cannot move around freely
- fixed shape
- fixed volume
- incomprehensible
Solid
- particles can move around freely, but not too much
- variable shape (shape of container)
- fixed volume
- virtually incomprehensible
Liquid
- particles move around freely
- variable shape
- variable volume
- easily compressed
Gas
Gaseous state of a substance that is a liquid or solid at room temperature
Vapor
- particles collide with enough energy to break into charged particles (+,-)
- variable shape
- variable volume
- found in starts and fluorescent light bulbs
Plasma
Can be observed without changing the pice tiny of the substance
Physical property
Physical property that depends on the amount of matter present (length)
Extensive property
Physical property that depends one the identity of substance, no the amount (density)
Intensive property
Describes the ability of a substance to undergo changes im identity
Chemical property
Physical or chemical property :
Melting point
Physical
Physical or chemical property :
Flammable
Chemical
Physical or chemical property :
Density
Physical
Physical or chemical property :
Magnetic
Physical
Type of change that changes the form of a substance without changing its identity && it’s properties remain the same
Physical change
Change from liquid to gas
Evaporation
Change from gas to liquid
Condensation
Change from solid to liquid
Melting
Change from liquid to solid
Freezing
Change from solid to gas
Sublimation
Change from gas to solid
Deposition
A change that results in a new substance being formed with different compositions and properties than the original substance
Chemical change
What are some signs of chemical changes?
- Changes in odor
- formation of gas
- formation of precipitate
- change in temperature
