Maxfac Flashcards
what is a primary survey
assessment carried out to identify and manage life-threatening conditions
what does a primary survey consist of
airway maintenance with cervical spine control
breathing and ventilation
circulation with control of haemorrhage
disability owing to neurological deficit
exposure and environmental control
how do you assess the patient’s airway
look, listen and feel
what are common causes of upper airway obstruction
tongue and other soft tissues
blood
vomit
foreign body
oedema
what types of airway obstruction are there
complete (silence)
partial (gurgling, snoring)
how is disability assessed
AVPU
alert
responds to vocal stimuli
responds to painful stimuli
unresponsive
what are signs of non-accidental injury
injuries sustained not consistent with history
apparent lack of concern
delayed presentation
clinical evidence of multiple injuries
fraenal tears
withdrawn or frightened child
how would you describe a cyst to a patient
a pathological cavity having fluid, semi-fluid or gaseous contents which is not created by the accumulation of pus
what are signs and symptoms of cysts
swelling
pain and tenderness
gradual tooth movement/ spacing
mobility
prevented tooth eruption
tooth discolouration
eggshell cracking noise on palpation
what are the 6 features of a radiographic assessment of cysts
location
margin
shape
locularity
multiplicity
inclusion of erupted teeth
what are the three developmental odontogenic cysts
dentigerous (eruption)
odontogenic keratocyst
lateral periodontal cyst
what are the three inflammatory odontogenic cysts
radicular cyst (associated with non-vital tooth)
residual (cyst remains after XLA)
inflammatory collateral
what is a developmental non-odontogenic cyst
nasopalatine duct cyst
what is enucleation of a cyst
all of the cystic lesion is removed under LA
what is marsupialisation
creation of a surgical window in the wall of the cyst, removing the contents of the cyst and suturing the cyst wall to the surrounding epithelium
may be enucleated at later date
may require obturator tube to keep it open
what are 4 types of biopsy
fine needle aspirate (blood, cysts, abscesses ect)
excisional
incisional
punch
how do you send a path sample to lab
put in 10% formalin
dont place on damp swab
suture to help pathologist orientate
ensure no leaks
